云冈石窟位于大同市西16公里处的武周山麓，依山开凿，东西绵延1公里。国家级重点文物保护单位是中国三大石窟群之一，也是世界闻明的艺术宝库。因石窟建在武周山麓，而其最高处名云冈，故取名为云冈石窟。现存洞窟53个，石雕造像5万1千余尊。大佛最高者17米,最小者仅几厘米。武周山南崖，东西伸展一公里，云冈石窟的佛龛，象蜂窝密布，大、中、小窟疏密有致地嵌贴在云冈半腰。这里石佛聚会，石人、石马、石刻，浮雕群集，是我国规模最大的石雕群之一。云冈石窟距今已有1,500多年的历史，始建于公元453年(北魏兴安二年)，由当时的佛教高僧昙曜奉旨开凿。大部分完成于公元495年，历时40余年，加上其余小窟，先后近50年时间。参加开凿人数，多达四万余人，连当时的狮子国（斯里兰卡）的佛教徒，也参与了这一举世闻名的艺术创作。
